Are You Stressing Yourself Out Over Thinking BIG…When The Answer Lies in Thinking small?

I recently stumbled across one of the many brilliant Dr Wayne Dyer YouTube videos that sparked enough light bulbs in my brain to light up a whole country!


He was talking about taking one step at a time and he referenced his habitual couple of beers he drank every night.


Dr Dyer often spoke of giving up drinking and although he wasn’t an alcoholic per se – he habitual drank.

Upon making the decision to give up drinking, he focused on just not drinking for that day only. Then he made the same decision the next day.


In this Youtube video I was listening to – he revealed a single daily focus of, “I just won’t drink today”.


He then went on to reveal that single daily decision led him to 20 years of sobriety at that point…and I am sure many more prior to his passing in 2015.


This gold-mine of wisdom set me off on a train of thinking that helped me realise exactly why I have never been able to resonate with the whole ‘think BIG’ conversation.


Dr Dyer went on to say, if he had allowed himself to ‘think big’ when it came to giving up alcohol and planned to not have another drink again for 20 years he felt he would have failed.


And I believe that is EXACTLY what many of you are doing also.


Many of the women I have mentored over the years have fallen into the trap of setting a big hairy scary goal and consuming themselves with the completion of it…to the point they either exhaust themselves trying or feel as though it is too big for them to ever achieve so they spend all their time in the hampster wheel of motivation / de-motivation, hopefulness and helplessness, energised and exhausted.


It’s the old proverb…. “how do you eat an elephant?”

Do you even know the answer?


Of course it’s one bite at a time.


And that’s exactly how to achieve your big hairy scary goals.


This can be applied to anything from weight loss and getting fit to building a business to money and so on.


So where does the Magic of Thinking Big actually fit in? And why do so many ‘coaches’ and entrepreneurs preach the practice of thinking so big it scares you?


Well there is a method in their madness…but… it’s not the ‘BIGNESS’ that brings your success.


It’s great to set yourself a big goal…an ultimate target you would ideally like to reach….


But there is one major piece of the puzzle you need to know before you go jumping in two feet wanting it all yesterday….


Firstly, your big goals are merely a destination. A place you reach…the indicator that alerts you to having reached it.


But what actually gets you there?

It’s the small steps and often, the micro-steps along the way…that cumulatively compounds to bring about a HUGE outcome.


It’s like a slow dripping tap…the initial drip seems like a ‘nothing’…but you go to bed…and wake up the next morning to find a sink full of water and a near flooded laundry!


But the actual magic is in your ability to know what your big vision is….and letting it go! Like a helium balloon floating up into the sky…continuing to take the small and often micro-steps along the way.


Which leads me to the the big P word…the P word few people like to hear….




Patience actually becomes a hell of a lot easier when you truly, madly, deeply believe your big hair scary goal is where your heading…and you believe it so much…you let it go with the absolute knowing…that’s where you’re heading.


And guess what!


When you believe in your destination THAT much…sometimes, you actually miss the target and land in a destination even BETTER than you imagined possible!


The other side effect of focusing on the micro-steps, whatever it is you need to do for that day only…


You have more ENERGY

You OVERCOME challenges

You step OUTSIDE your comfort zone

You have more CONFIDENCE

You FOLLOW your gut

You make CLEARER decisions




You have MORE FUN doing it!


There will still be hard days. There will still be times you question everything. There will still be moments of feeling as though it’s never going to happen….


But you leave all of that in and within the same day it occurs.


And you wake up, on a new day, and take another micro step towards your big hair scary goal.


It’s so true what it so often said by those who have reached that big hairy scary goal before you….


It’s not the destination that matters…its the journey you took to get there.


So…enjoy the journey!
